Telecommunications is quickly growing in skillset demand and popularity and has no intention of slowing down. Having generated a “revenue of £31.8bn in the last 12 months” (First Point Group), the UK Telecoms market has seen a rise in demand for “experience in acquisition, design and construction of telecom sites”. One person who has seen this growth first-hand is Jamie, a Telecoms Field Operations Trainer at We Are Group.
“Telecoms has given me the opportunity to constantly learn and develop throughout my career, and gain many practical, technical, and interpersonal skills”.
With over 25 years of experience, Jamie has seen and been a part of the development and progression of the Telecoms industry within the UK. His passion for the growth of this industry has seen his career progress into a Telecoms Operative role, swiftly followed by being a Telecoms Health and Safety Trainer; influenced by the people he worked with and was mentored by.
“I have had the pleasure to learn from many talented individuals and worked for some fantastic companies, as well as meeting many customers from a variety of backgrounds.”
“Now my passion is to share my knowledge with the next generation of Telecoms Operatives, and I am keen to see how Telecoms will progress over the next 25 years.”
At present, Jamie shares his industry knowledge as a We Are Group Trainer, supporting others to develop their skills and launch their careers in Telecoms Field Operations. The latest module Jamie has taught his cohorts is the Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) module, which is “a type of high-speed network standard for internet access, primarily used in fibre-optic broadband services” (GPON).
“I particularly like teaching GPON because it is technical, and at first, the learners sometimes find it a challenge, but in a short time, they are able to present back to me the components of a GPON network and how it works”.
“Being a Skills Bootcamp Trainer gives me great job satisfaction as I see my learners start the course with little to no knowledge, and complete the course with a variety of industry knowledge.”
When asked about the importance of a career in Telecoms Field Operations, Jamie emphasised how this career path is important as the skills required for this industry, are in high demand and enable the UK to grow and provide connectivity to everyone.
“It is vital that we have the people with the correct and necessary skills to ensure that the UK continues its growth whilst also ensuring a full-fibre network is available to everyone, no matter what part of the country, rural or urban, they are from.”
“Skills Bootcamps give people the key knowledge of the Telecoms Field industry so they know which roles to apply for and to give them confidence when applying and attending interviews”.
