What is an energy tariff?

An energy tariff is the pricing plan for gas and electricity set by your energy supplier. The amount you pay is calculated based on the unit rates (the cost of the electricity or gas that you use) and standing charges (a daily fixed fee that is the cost of the gas or electricity being supplied to your home).

You will find that different energy suppliers offer different tariffs, so it is important to know that you can switch and find better deals to save you money.

Types of energy tariffs

Do you know what energy tariff you are on?

Here is a list of all the tariffs available and we can help you find the best tariff for you:

  • Standard Variable Tariff – this is the default tariff if you have not switched or if your fixed-rate tariff has come to an end.
  • Fixed Rate Tariff – the price you pay for energy will stay the same for 12, 24 or 36 months.
  • Prepayment Tariff – energy is paid in advance using a top-up meter.
  • Green Energy Tariff – some or all of your electricity comes from renewable sources such as wind and solar panels.
  • Time-of-use Tariff – charges different rates depending on the time of day.

Why switch?

According to Ofgem, UK households could save between £200 – £400 a year on their energy bills by switching to a cheaper deal. Many households in the UK are on their supplier's Standard Variable Tariff, which is often the most expensive.

Here are some of the benefits for switching:

  • Lower bills
  • Protection from price hikes
  • Access to green energy
  • Better customer service

Things to remember before switching

  • Review your tariff annually to avoid overpaying.
  • Fixed tariffs offer stability, whilst variable tariffs are cheaper when energy prices drop.
  • Time-of-use tariffs will save you money but only for usage during off-peak hours.
  • Smart meters help track your energy use and enable you to adjust your behaviours.
  • Using green energy tariffs can reduce environmental impact.
