Embracing Technology and Overcoming Isolation - read Frank's story

February 12, 2024

Frank, a retired gentleman from Manchester, had been struggling to keep up with the ever-evolving digital world. His only access to the internet was an outdated computer that was difficult to use and slow to operate. As a result, Frank felt increasingly isolated from his family and friends, as well as being unable to take advantage of the many online services available.

Fortunately, Frank was referred to We Are Group via The Bread and Butter Thing - a charity bringing affordable food to the most deprived areas of the UK - who are supported by Lloyds Banking Group’s Digital Helpline.  With our collective help, Frank was able to get a new tablet and SIM card for free, as well as receive digital skills training from an expert trainer.

The training was tailored to Frank's needs and abilities, walking him through the basics of how to use his new tablet and SIM card. This included how to switch the tablet on, insert the SIM card, and set up a password to ensure only he could access his device. She also taught Frank how to navigate the different screens, access apps, and browse the internet. Frank also learnt useful tips and tricks to make his devices more user-friendly, such as adjusting the font size and enabling voice commands.

What made the session truly valuable for Frank was Sarah's ability to tailor the training to his specific needs. She took the time to understand Frank's goals and priorities, ensuring that he learnt the skills he needed to stay in touch with his family. They focused on setting up video calls, messaging apps, and sharing photos, as these were the ways Frank wanted to interact with his loved ones.

By the end of the session, Frank felt a newfound sense of confidence. He could now effortlessly navigate his devices, send messages, and make video calls. His fear and frustration had been replaced with excitement.

Frank was thrilled with the results of the training, saying: “The training was ideal and just what I wanted.”

Thanks to the support of the Digital Helpline and We Are Group, Frank now feels much more confident using his new tablet. Not only has the training enabled him to keep in touch with his family, but it has also given him access to a range of online services and apps that he wasn’t able to use before. This has allowed Frank to remain independent and connected in an ever-changing digital world.
